Instructions of Bulk Carrier Cargo Hold Cleaning with High-Pressure Cleaning Machine

The release date:2022-08-10 viewed:977

Hold cleaning is a necessary step for bulk carriers when changing cargoes. Especially when the preparation is clean cargo such as grain, hold cleaning and inspection is particularly important. In practice, the existing method is mainly manual hold cleaning, but there are often problems such as incomplete hold cleaning, inability to remove large stains, and difficulty in cleaning high places in large holds. The traditional manual hold cleaning will not only encounter the problem that it is difficult to pass the hold inspection at once, but also the safety risk of the crew.

So, how to carry out a scientific, effective, safe and fast hold cleaning? What kind of hold cleaning machine should be used when doing the work? What is the procedure of hold cleaning? This article will answer these questions one by one.

1. Factors that Affect the Results of Hold Cleaning

Bulk carrier cargo hold cleaning is quite limited due to the high distance, we cannot effectively clean the hold close to the ship. Therefore, when cleaning, we can adjust the cleaning distance, water jet pressure and flow rate of high-pressure water lance by adding extra length (20m) hold cleaning guide pipe line system in order to make up for the defect of not being able to clean high place.

2. Steps of High-Pressure Water Cleaning

There are five steps while doing bulk carrier cargo hold cleaning:

Step 1: Sweep the Hold

Before the formal cleaning, the engineering operators first use bamboo poles, brooms or other tools to generally sweep the hold to make the subsequent cleaning easier.

Step 2: Pre-wash

The engineering operator needs to assemble the high-pressure water gun and connect the power supply, inlet and outlet pipes to the high-pressure water gun.

Normally, we use the high-pressure water gun (short gun) connected to fresh water for pre-washing, the working water pressure should be guaranteed at 500bar, the flow rate should be controlled at 19L/min. The pressure of inlet water should be kept at 1~3bar. Check the power and inlet water to make sure they are connected well when start cleaning. Pre-cleaning fresh water must be sufficient, and fresh water should be as clean as possible without dirt, otherwise it is easy to cause equipment water-short protection.

It should be reminded that, without special note, we use M22*1.5 quick connector and DN25 pagoda connector on our high-pressure water gun.

Step 3: Chemical Washing

HOWEVERJET chemical jetter is equipped with a 50m discharge hose and a chemical telescopic lance (7m total length).

Operator needs to assemble the chemical pump and chemical lance and then connect the compressed air and chemicals. Chemical injector and chemical containers are placed on the deck. The dilution ratio of cleaning agent depends on the selected chemicals, temperature, climate and other conditions. Please refer to our engineers for details.

After chemical cleaning, the foam should be left on the bulkhead surface for 20-30 minutes (the cleaning agent would not dry out as precondition). If the ship's route is from temperate zone to cold zone, the crew should choose the area with warmer temperature for cabin cleaning. If the outdoor temperature is very low, the concentration of the cleaning agent can be increased moderately, and the appropriate use of hot water will be more effective.

Step 4: High-pressure Freshwater Full Flushing

Connect hold cleaning guide pipe line system (20m) to the cleaning equipment EP500 to do a full flush. Following a high to low flush order will save a lot of flushing time.

Step 5: Local Inspection & Freshwater Flushing

Operator first inspects the cleaning condition and, if necessary, can perform a chemical cleaning and flushing again. Before the final freshwater flushing, operator should clean the chemical blaster and chemical telescopic lance with freshwater. Freshwater is then added to the holding container for the final freshwater flushing.

HOWEVERJET Bulk Carrier Cleaning Kit provides a complete solution for bulk carrier hold cleaning. It facilitates the cleaning work by spraying water up to a height of more than 20 meters with fresh water and high-pressure water jets, and it also can spray all kinds of liquid chemicals to the highest part of the ship’s hold.
